As the rain falls and the sun beams on Southeast Michigan, local crops are blooming. You’ll find the best of the region at Hiller’s starting now and continuing well into the fall.

To get things going, check out these locally-grown items, which you’ll see at Hiller’s any time in the coming weeks.

asparagus.jpgAsparagus – Michigan asparagus ripens ready enough to harvest starting in late April and continuing for 6-7 weeks through the middle of June. With approximately 25 million pounds grown annually in Michigan, the mitten state ranks third nationally in asparagus production. Asparagus is rich in folic acid, low in calories and sodium, and a fine source of fiber and potassium.

radishes.jpgBunch radishes – This member of the mustard family comes in red, white and black, various sizes and shapes and with a sharp flavor. Radishes are good sources of folate, calcium, potassium and fiber.

spinach.jpgBunch spinach – Fresh spinach contains Vitamin A, Vitamin C and fiber and it’s also a rich source of iron and calcium. For the most nutritional benefit, it’s best to eat fresh spinach quickly after purchasing.

parsley.jpgHerbs – Cilantro and Italian Parsley – Fresh herbs add flavor and distinction to cooked dishes, pasta and grain salads and salad dressings without added sodium or calories.

bibb_lettuce.jpgBibb and Boston Lettuces – Starting in early June, you’ll find locally-grown bibb and boston lettuce at Hiller’s! Both are members of the Butterhead Lettuce family with sweet, succulent leaves.

flowers.jpgFlowers – Brighten up your kitchen table with flowers grown locally! At some Hiller’s stores you’ll find hanging plants and flats for planting in your yard. Year-round, visit the Hiller’s floral departments for everyday arrangements as well as for events of every size. (Hiller’s can do flowers for weddings, and we’ll deliver for a large-scale event!)
